STUFF OF EPIC – a Sensory exhibition

12.02.2018 | Past events and exhibitions

STUFF OF EPIC IS THE BRAND NEW EXHIBITION AT THE B#S GALLERY: MORE THAN A COMMON EXHIBITION, IT IS A DEEP SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE BETWEEN EPIC NARRATIVE AND CONTEMPORARY ART.

Stuff of Epic provides a new sensory way to approach the book and the epic poem through a spiritual experience, in which the dimension of time is suspended, sight and hearing are massively overloaded. The purpose of the exhibit is to investigate the sensory universe, which emerges from the lines of epic poems such as the Gerusalemme Liberata and Il Conquisto di Granada, through the spectacular and multisensorial artwork of three international artists: Clare Charnely, Sebastien Durante and Joshua Cesa.

You can freely visit the exhibition from 3rd February until 17th March, Monday to Sunday, 11.00 am-7.00pm at B#Side Gallery, Vicolo Isola di Mezzo 3/5, 31100, Treviso. Visited guides are always available (information and reservation: info@iodeposito.org/ +39 375 5532009)

Stuff of Epic requires visitors to take off their mobile phones and watches to let them immerse in a new spiritual and inner timeless dimension, in which it develops a relation between the past carried by the lines of epic poem and the sense experience carried by the contemporary artworks.

Clare Charnley’s installation Untitled War Series is inspired by an ancient tapestry, which represents a physical and cultural clash. It develops through different steps; in the first one, human pictures are erased, the focus is channelled on objects, some are the debris of warfare like scimitars, gas canisters, spears and small arms, but also hats, letters, jewellery and work tools, objects of non-war. Separated from their owners, objects are placed in an empty white space, they loose their original functions and they gain new relevance through a tri-dimensional re-birth, which represents the last steps of Charnley’s work and it symbolizes the war legacy, which weighs on our generation.

Offbeat sounds flow out of Insight a hearing installation by Joshua Cesa, these sounds with the additional voiceover of the lines of  Il Conquisto di Granada by Girolamo Graziani and Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso provide a hearing overload.

Rendre les armes by Sebastien Durante is inspired by a bronze war memorial representing a man holding a sword; Durante re-makes the sword in a silicon triptych, the weapon gradually looses its strength and rise against the authority of military statuary. It is a symbol of war controversy.

Stuff of Epic wants to create an aesthetic experience involving inner and physical senses, enjoyable by all kind of visitors.
