From 9 to 11 October 2024 at the Bocconi University in Milan, the contemporary art exhibition Peripheral Memories recounts the journey of artists in residence in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The artists were nourished by the suggestions coming from the industrial sectors that for decades have represented the productive and occupational heart of the area, between lights and shadows, underlining the contradictory aspects.
Moving among the area’s heritage, they created works of art capable of evoking its productive identity, with forms, materials, gestures, and sensorial elements.
Two symbolic works produced with the project were identified and brought to the attention of the visitors of the 12th CSR and Social Innovation Fair.

Claudio Beorchia
Six digital photos, 30×45 cm, 2020-2021
Passe-partout in white plexiglass, glass and steel support
Claudio Beorchia carried out his artist residency in February 2021 in the Monfalcone area, working with the company. After consulting local and company archives, visiting the company, and interviewing entrepreneurs, workers and citizens, the artist developed a photographic series that investigates the relationship between the production of luxury boats and the territory, between the world of luxury boat production and the productive fabric that generates them in the city where the shipyards are located, capturing its dichotomy.
The artist brings the two poles (the urban reality of the shipyard and the luxury boats) into contact through the photographic tool of the passe-partout, inspired by the portholes of Monte Carlo ships.
Claudio Beorchia (1979, Vercelli, Italy) is a visual artist, designer and photographer, fascinated by the complexity of the reality around him, especially when it manifests itself in social dynamics, highlighting vulnerabilities, contradictions and contemporary human activities. The artist’s site-specific works break out of classical conceptions, taking contemporary practices outside the canonical places of art.

Yilin Zhu
Audio tracks, 2020-2021
Sound artist and researcher in acoustic and musical engineering, Yilin Zhu, created a series of six unreleased sound tracks through her artist residency in contact with various industrial sectors in the border region of far north-eastern Italy. The result is a collection of tracks of generative music, which enhances the contradictions of the production (and social) systems of reference of each sector.
The noises of port operations, the workings in metal workshops, the pressing of coffee and the carding of textile fibres are some of the sounds that inspired the Chinese artist in the creation of the audio tracks. The soundtracks are highly immersive and capable of evoking the production processes that characterise each industrial sector. Working transversally between art and industry, Zhu has produced with his works a meticulous study of sound combinations and a strong emotional component.
Yilin Zhu (Shangai, Cina, 1995) is a researcher and sound artist whose interests lie in the search for creativity in sound and music, exploiting empirical methods from the domain of computer science.
Her generative music sound works are able to transform noise into ambient art and musical backgrounds.
