🇬🇧 (Slovensko besedilo spodaj)

The exhibition ‘Wide winds, we set sail’ (a quote from Pia Mlakar’s sailing diary) is dedicated to the renovation of the sailing boat ‘Galeb’ by the ballet duo Pia and Pino Mlakar. The exhibition opens on 7 July 2023 at 6 p.m. at the Monfort Information Centre (former Salt Warehouse), Obala 8, Portorož. It interweaves the documentation of the restoration of the boat, which Neja Tomšič documented between 2020 and 2022, with installations and video works that poetically and symbolically interpret its cultural significance into a story about bodies united by work, sea and time.

On display in the scenic arsenal will be drawings, installations and videos that interrogate the fragile bonds between two ships: the Galeb ‘that was’ and the Galeb ‘that is to be’. The works on display search for fragile relationships, structures, tensions, voids, and their rhythm. In a series of sculptures that support and direct the gaze towards parts of the Galeb deemed unusable, the artist pursues a choreography of objects, waste, dust, which she understands as active and fundamental actants, in fact as the substance into which the spirit of the boat is poured during the two phases of renovation.

After the opening, at 9 p.m. at the Tartini Theatre in Piran, we invite you to the dance performance ‘Step Out of My Shadow PI 314’, a homage to the life and work of Pia and Pino Mlakar. The event is part of Primorski Poletni Festival.
On the way to the theatre, you can see the sailing ship Galeb in front of the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” Piran.

On Saturday 8 July, at 10 a.m., we invite you back to Monfort for a breakfast and a lecture with the author of the exhibition, Neja Tomšič, and the dancers Nastja Bremec Rynia and Michal Rynia on the experience of working with Galeb and the traditions of Pia and Pino Mlakar.
The exhibition is a co-production of IoDeposito and the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” Piran.

Razstava nastaja v koprodukciji IoDeposito in Pomorskega muzeja “Sergej Mašera” Piran.
