WASTED

23.12.2024 | Past events and exhibitions

Between January and March 2025, WASTED returns to Friuli Venezia Giulia and brings to Trieste and Gradisca d’Isonzo eight biting voices of the contemporary art scene.

In the symbolic locations of the cross-border area, female artists will discuss some of the hot topics of today’s women’s issues, tracing paths and connections, hypothesising antidotes and new keys to interpreting the phenomena of gender inequality.
A diffuse exhibition, conceptually divided into four chapters, presenting visions and suggestions from the world of art on the relationship between man-woman-nature-society, activating circuits of critical thought on iconography and visual representation, on the themes of the gaze and the body in relation to society, tracing and suggesting those collective cultural paths that can shorten the distance between genders.

A series of appointments, performances and talks, with thematic insights into project research, which open up to new audiences through content-based collaborations.

TIDÉ – REFORMATION / Multiple Body Walk / with Abigaïl Sia
Reservations welcome at prenotazioni@iodeposito.org

Walking to capture the flow of history, walking to reflect on the impact of racial and gender violence on the body and mind. With TIDÉ Reformation, walking becomes an act of healing and reconstruction, transforming wounds into strength and silences into visibility.
The performance begins at Sala U. Veruda, in a musical and sensory immersion where the artist shares a fragment of TIDÉ’s states of being. A journey between pain, resistance, and hope.
Then, the walk continues through the streets of Trieste, where her passage questions collective narratives.
Wrapped in a second plastic skin, both armor and mirror of societal scars, Tidé traces a path of resistance. At the intersection of the intimate and the political, this moving work celebrates the vital force of those who walk for human rights.

Abigaïl Sia (1990, France), a French-Ivorian and Italian multidisciplinary artist, develops an artistic practice that fuses performance and activism. Her work focuses on the experience of racialised individuals in a post-colonial society, with a particular interest in invisibility and the consequences of the impact of systemic violence on bodies, psyches and metabolisms, which she addresses through a de-colonial approach.
Her performances also explore the duality of emotional and behavioural states, as well as the transformation of body and mind in response to trauma. She places ‘embodied resistance’ at the centre of her work.

Saturday 1 February 2025 | 11 a.m.
From Polo Culturale di Casa Maccari, Gradisca d’Isonzo
Preview of the exhibition with authorities and journalists, and urban performance by Abigaïl Sia

Wrapped in plastic film, the artist wanders around the city. The wrapping stiffens her movements and characterises her by the fact that she is objectified and degradable: a concrete representation of all those agents that impede the woman’s freedom of movement, which is even more brutally restrained when she is afro-descended.
The action is a ‘mise en forme’ of prejudice, impersonated by the suffocating envelopment that envelops the artist and accompanies her everywhere, squeezing movement and breath. Surprising in her direct and provocative language, during the performance, the artist, seated in the cafés of the main via Ciotti, on the city buses, or walking through the city streets, seeks cohabitation with a system that manipulates her living space and limits her movement through transparent walls: a metaphor of the female experience, equated with racial experience: it is easy to perceive the danger of suffocation, but at the same time it is possible to identify a movement that allows one to subvert this condition of limitation from within.
The artist’s body symbolises metamorphosis and awareness, in a necessary yet challenging skin-to-skin dance with the plastic fleece of disparity.
The ‘walking performance’ lasts for about an hour, after which it will return to Casa Maccari for its finale. All participants will be invited to take part in a relaxed and informal talk with the artist during the opening toast, to exchange impressions and reflections.

Participation in the performance is free of charge, reservation is recommended at prenotazioni@iodeposito.org
