22.03.2020 | News

In the frame of the B#Side War project / 6th edition, Barbara Mydlak will conclude her artist residency in the months of August and September 2020, in the area of Gorizia and the Collio border, producing an “artist ethnography” that will investigate the memory of the border in the cities of Gorizia, Nova Gorica, Cormons, San Michele del Carso, San Floriano.
After interviews with citizens (local historians, cultural activists, teachers, writers, families, the elderly and young people), and thanks to their involvement in creative activities, the artist is developing the land artwork “Transition: The East & West”: a participatory land artwork that represents an ode to the transitory passage (which characterized our regional territory for millennia).
An installation will be built with natural materials in the open space, on the border between Italian and Slovenian Collio, a symbolic gate that will refer to the lack of edges, to “reopen the passage, as well as communication” between the east and the west of the world ( dimensions of which our territory has been the watershed over the centuries).
The portal will be built with organic materials, precisely where the gates that for millennia have represented the gates of access to the region.
Symbol of transition, transformation, renewal and gradual construction of a new world, this metaphorical door will be made of small branches, tree needles, grass, dry stems, dried leaves and flowers, ropes of organic material, earth.
The work is currently in the planning phase, in its last phase, it will be built collectively with the public and presented in an artist talk, on 18th-19th September and subsequently in the final exhibition of the project in October, in Udine and Trieste .

Barbara Mydlak (1987, Warsaw, Poland) is a contemporary artist whose poetics focuses on the use of organic materials representative of the historical identity, the artist reflects deeply on the theme of time and its passage.
